New Goals!It's a new year, 2017. The time of the year where many miniature painters put forth goals of what they want to get done in the year to come. I also have done this. Now I have realized that since I don't keep up the blog as much as I would like, although I will try to post occasionally. Hopefully my goal is to keep up the blog more regularly. Although I have also said this last year.<br />
<br />
My goal for this year is to place another dent into the lead mountain. With GHQ Micro Armour being the first choice currently. I'm working on a Finnish group of troops for the Winter War, to use with Command Decision. At least 6mm paints up much quicker than 28mm calvary ;)<br />
<br />
Last year I did meet some of my painting goals to complete at least some of the Samurai army. I'll probably return to that this year sometime. I also need to return to the Persians as well this year. It's a nice change to be painting 6mm instead of 28mm for a change. I feel as though I've burned out of 28mm a little. Although I still hear the siren song calling me back to finish the figures.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9215583226012699668.post-68511213354550702282016-11-01T08:19:00.001-07:002016-11-01T08:19:17.671-07:00It's All Greek To Me!Hi All,<br />
<br />
This is another one of my semi-annual blog posts. I had been working on different eras of troops for a while and now decided to finish some of the Greeks which had been sitting un-based for quite awhile. The unfinished figures were sitting there leering at me to finish them, and eventually I caved into their demands.<br />
<br />
I have primed another swath of both Persians and Greeks, which means in the future I'll have to finish more of the Persians to give the Greeks something to fight against. The decals were printed on a photo printer on the water transfer decal paper. It did cause the ink to deteriorate, even after the sealer layer was applied. The battle damage on the shields was applied with a metal file, this is another reason I like plastic figures. But I got to where I liked the worn look on the decals, especially on some of the Spartans. They still need a layer of dull coat, but I thought that they were "finished enough" to be photographed.<br />
<br />
I tried getting some photos of my civil war figures, but decided to wait on photos until they are based and blackwashed, as the photos came out looking too flat for them. But so far I have painted up about seven regiments of figures for the south. I have 1 regiment of the Louisiana Tigers done, the striped pants were difficult to do but very rewarding in the end.<br />

Mostly what I do is paint, although occasionally I do get in a game on the tabletop. Shocking, I know. Here are some photos from a recent Check Your Six! game that I played with my gaming group. The Japanese camouflage on the Sally's were fun to paint. In this particular encounter, the bombers are trying to inflict as many hits as possible on the airfield, while the American P-40's are trying to defend it and shoot down as many of the bombers as possible. The US planes are my dad's work, while the Japanese planes are mine. We've divided the forces up, so he is painting mainly the Allies, while I paint the Axis.<div>

<br />
Another issue of Miniature Monday is coming your way!<br />
<br />
I might be bouncing around between lots of different eras in the near future. This is due to my Confederate troops arriving for the ACW. They are 18mm Blue Moon castings. This is also my first time going smaller than 28mm for figures. I also want to start painting more Persians, as right now my nearly finished Greeks outnumber the finished Persians. Although a number of Persians have been assembled and attached to bases, just awaiting paint. It will soon be time to tip the scales more in the Persians favor. This will push the Saxon figures further back into probably next year sometime. Unless I burn out and want to paint something different.<br />
<br />
I think I've realized that I really do enjoy the painting process more than actually getting games in with the miniatures. Because I find it is easier to find time in the evenings and weekends in which to prep and paint miniatures, but it is harder to get my gaming friends to agree on a time and place to actually set up a game. Although I feel that this is a commonality amongst miniature gamers.<br />
<br />
Here are some photos of the American Civil War figures which are prepped, mounted to craft sticks, and primed. Now all that is left is to paint them and base them. The frightening thing is that it is just a portion of the entire force, I've not begun prep on any of the artillery, artillerists, cavalry, or commanders yet. And there is still more infantry to base. I think it's around 800 figures for the Gettysburg force, and in total I think it's over 1,000 castings.<br />
<br />

<br />
I haven't posted much in the past two months, although I have been busy painting things now that work has slowed down some. I'll have to update the blog with some progress on my Greeks, currently I feel as if I'm burning out on painting the Samurai. Although I have sufficient to get to the table to play a game now, outside of calvary, as I've been painting the "less complex" figures and putting off painting the cavalry units as they are like two figures in one.<br />
<br />
On a different note, the lead mountain has grown. I'll be expanding my miniatures hobby into the American Civil War, courtesy of the Blue Moon Miniatures. Both my father and I have an interest in the "Across A Deadly Field" rules. He the North, and me the South. So we've begun reading the rules and have ordered the lead. I'll be working on painting the South when they arrive. I'd better get my drawl ready!<br />
<br />
For my ancients, a lot of the Greek Hoplites are assembled, just awaiting basing and paint. Although they've been that way for about half a year now. The same with the Persian infantry, only have about six Persians painted, and will need to get better pictures of them. I'll do a Persian update when I have a bit more of them done. I do know that I'll need more Persian cavalry down the road (Perhaps Warlord games will re-offer the calvary, as they don't seem to be available in their store anymore.) I still have to assemble the Greek Light Troops from the Numidian boxes. As well as get started on my Saxon force. I'm not sure what rules I'll use them with, I more just wanted to have some Viking-like Saxons in my collection. The Greeks at the moment I want to use with the Hail Caesar! rules, and I'm unsure about what rules to use for the Vikings at the moment.<br />
<br />
Have a good battle!<br />
Kevin<br />

This post is to inform where I am currently at in the samurai progress. I didn't have too much progress earlier in the year because I was finishing my masters at DeVry. Although now that that is complete I am enjoying getting time to work on painting some more miniatures. I look forward to getting more painting done over this Memorial Day break.<br />
<br />
If I field the units in 4-figure infantry units and 2-figure cavalry units. Then these are the strengths of the forces currently.<br />
<br />
Takeda Force (78 figures finished)<br />
5 Samurai units (20 figures)<br />
8 Calvary units (16 figures)<br />
5 Ashigaru units (20 figures)<br />
5.5 Archer units (22 figures)<br />
<br />
Tokugawa/ Oda Force (88 figures finished)<br />
5.5 Samurai units (22 figures)<br />
8 Calvary units (16 figures)<br />
5 Ashigaru units (20 figures)<br />
7.5 Archer units (30 figures)<br />
<br />
This is at least enough to start testing some different rules out with the figures. The figures are all based individually on metal bases of 1''x1'' for infantry and 1''x2'' for calvary. Then when I form up a unit, I'll cut magnetic vinyl to make the bases act as a whole unit. This will give the flexibility to use the figures for skirmish games such as Ronin, without having to have two separate armies. It was nice to see that Warlord Games will be releasing the Wargames Factory Samurai under the Pike & Shotte line of figures. At least if I need to flesh out the armies more, I can still do so.<br />
<br />
And now for pictures (the whole reason you are here reading this post), I finally own a macro lens and look forward to using it the next time my gaming buddies set up a game, these are tests to see how the lens works on small objects such as miniatures. It is safe to say that I like the results I get from the lens. I can't wait to see the sea of banners on the gaming table, once I get all the figures finished. The back banners were one the main draw to this era for me. Eventually, I'll have to do some tests to figure out what I can realistically field on whatever size table I wind up using for the battle of Mikatagahara. Although my next step will probably be to push some of the units around on an empty table to learn the ruleset before attempting this undertaking.<br />

I feel as if I've made a dent in my collection. Although lead and plastic mountain seems to grow with other eras of interest, namely ancients and medieval. Although those will be a future project. The most sizable increase in the hobby was the completion of a portion of my 28 mm samurai army, which if it goes as expected I should see it hit the gaming table in the early part of next year *fingers crossed.* The white and red flagged portions are of the Takeda Clans (Takeda Shingen and Takeda Katsuyori), while the yellow flags are Tokugawa Ieyasu. I almost have some Oda Nobunaga units complete, they should be completed within the next week or so.<br />

Calvary for the samurai armies have been mostly assembled this year, I still have a few boxes to finish assembling, and then will come the fun of painting the rest of them. They take substantially more time because the cavalry are the most detailed of the Wargames Factory samurai figures. In the bottom box are some archers for Oda Nobunaga and Tokugawa clans which still need decals and basing.</div>

This next photo is what is currently on my painting table at the moment. Some samurai for the Oda Nobunaga clan, and Tokugawa clans. These should be finished painting within the next week or so. One of my goals this December was to clean up some room at my hobby area. I was looking at my painting table yesterday and noticed that I've had these zombie figures sitting around half finished for about the last year. I finished them up last night with a sepia wash. I'm not sure what to do with the basing on them, but I'll know more when I finish assembling the box, as this is about half the box. I can't recall if I've shown pictures before of these walkers. They are originally Dust Tactics walkers which I intend to us for In Her Majesty's Name to try out the walker rules.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And finally I've finished a few tokens for Osprey's Ronin system. Since you can take the heads of your fallen opponents I thought it would be fun to make some decapitated head tokens.</div>

<br />
Hi All,<br />
<br />
This post is basically a picture dump of the finished samurai so far. Right now I have two different clans under Takeda for the battle of Mikatagahara. I still need to paint up Tokugawa and Nobunaga, and the rest of Takeda, and all the cavalry which will take some time as i'm finding out. The decals were printed myself on waterslide decal paper and sealed with the decal sealing solution. So far it has been good printing out blacks. The inkjet has trouble getting very red reds however. It's sort of difficult getting good photos of miniatures, because my current lens has a very narrow focusing depth when its up close.<br />

Finnish AircraftCheck Your Six! was my first foray into painting miniatures. If you haven't checked it out it is available from <a href="http://skirmishcampaigns.com/cy6/index.htm">SkirmishCampaigns.</a> It is a fast playing WW2 simulation of air combat in 3d. They also have a second version which is jet combat. Throughout my time painting some of the CY6 aircraft I've painted some Japanese and Finland planes. Although I haven't painted any aircraft in quite some time, I noticed these pictures on my computer and wanted to upload a post about them<br />
<br />
The Continuation War for the Finns was a matter of defending their homeland against Soviet Invaders. Some good resources I found on the air war between the Fins and Russians are Osprey's "Lentolaivue 24," and "Finnish Aces of WW2." The book on Llv 24 (as the squadron will be known from this point forward) has a wealth of information about the pilots and missions they flew. The Finnish Pilots were very effective with their aircraft in both the winter war and the continuation war.<br />
<br />
And now on to the miniatures. These are 1/300 scale Buffalos from Raiden. Its fun to paint their squat shape in the black and green of the Finnish air force. Here are some photos of them, my personal favorites are the winter camouflaged ones.<br />

<br />
I'd like to find other books focusing on the other Finnish air units from the flying regiment 1 (recon) and flying regiment 4 (bomber). I've found a book in Finnish on ler4. If I can find some other books, they will be of great use as I continue to paint up my Finns for Check Your Six! If anyone knows of such books, drop a comment below. Eventually I'll get back to painting aircraft when I tire of my current ancients kick. I still have quite a lead mountain of German, Italian, and Japanese aircraft. Although most of what I wanted to complete for the Finns is done.<br />
<br />
Until next time,<br />

<br />
It's been about four months since my last post (Wow!). I should probably try and keep this blog updated a bit more regularly. I've been sort of busy with school and work. Although I have been rapidly assembling more Wargames Factory miniatures. I had a good amount of time while recovering from getting my wisdom teeth out to assemble most of my Greek Hoplites, and some Persians.<br />
<br />
<img height="208" src="https://i1.wp.com/www.quickmeme.com/img/c8/c82f116b14ec94338efcbdc160e63c16a599a826f78adafad34f8deec68fc04b.jpg" width="320" /><br />
<br />
Here's whats on the workbench at the moment.<br />
<br />
<strike>-Assemble Samurai</strike><br />
-Assemble Samurai Calvary<br />
-Paint Samurai (In progress)<br />
<br />
-Assemble Persians (Continue assembling the hoard)<br />
-Paint Persians (In progress)<br />
<br />
-Assemble Greek Hoplites (60ish built)<br />
-Paint Greek Hoplites (In Progress)<br />
<br />
-Base above miniatures (Not started)<br />
<br />
As you can see I'm stretching out into the ancients era. I have both the Hail Ceasar rules on order and the Field of Glory rules on order. From what I've been able to find out, the FoG uses a specific basing system, but HC does not. Which will give me the flexibility to use both systems with a single army. I'll be lucky to get any of it on the table before the year is out, although its a goal (perhaps a lofty one).<br />
<br />
I'll post again probably once I have some units based and finished.<br />
<br />
Here's the progress so far on the Greeks.<br />

It was a relatively light turn out due to Tabletop Day which claimed a lot of our members at various events. But in other news, I finally got a good chunk of time today to finish up the assembly of my samurai army. Next it will be on to painting. I got the samurai cavalry assembled today which will more than likely go to support one of the clans (until I manage to get more cavalry).<br />
<br />
It felt good to finally get back to making some progress on this project. I'm planning on painting Takeda for sure as one of the clans, and I'm still debating as to what I'll paint the other. Possibly Tokogawa, so that I can fight the battle of Mikata-ga-hara. Although I'll need significantly more cavalry.<br />
<br />
Figures done:<br />
Ashigaru with Yari (60)<br />
Archers (60)<br />
Arrow Carriers (4)<br />
Samurai with spears or katana (74)<br />
Tai Commanders (9)<br />
Horagi, conch (2)<br />
Lead Commanders (2)<br />
Taiko Drummers with drum (2)<br />
Banner Bearers (5)<br />
Mounted Units (12)<br />
<br />
<br />
Anyways, until I get to painting, here is just an update and a future goal for this project.<br />
Keep them dice rolling.<br />

It was slightly down in turn out than usual. But I had a good time nevertheless. I played several board games over the course of the day all of which I have never played before.<br />
<br />
The first was Nautilus (<a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3154/nautilus">http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/3154/nautilus</a>)<br />
<br />
The game consisted of a building phase where each player placed down a tile(s) in order to construct more of the underwater base. The game is a balance of building up an economy by sending down different modules to the floor, and exploration of the surrounding area in order to unearth treasures, and ultimately pieces of the lost city of Atlantis. It was an enjoyable game with a definite shift in strategy once the end game began.<br />
<br />
The second was Caverna (<a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/102794/caverna-cave-farmers">http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/102794/caverna-cave-farmers</a>)<br />
<br />
Since I was familiar with Agricola the basics of the game were similar. The game adds weaponry which you can equip to your people, and send them on quests to obtain loot. This additional level of complexity gives it a different challenge. The food seemed to be much more easy to obtain in this game. It had enough variety in the buildings you could acquire which were similar to the improvement cards in Agricola. I did enjoy the way that the harvests are unknown and change every time you play. I thoroughly enjoyed the game, it took several hours to play through. It had enough complexity and differences from Agricola to have an entirely different feel to the game, despite having the same worker placement mechanic. In my book it is a winner.<br />
<br />
Here is a photo of our game in progress.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvM84SDhuMcD6ltMyRNOt8PwF6cVZZUomdMlbrd_Bm0TTI0QUL8xD0RgGOjO2YVfZOrWDORVXxOPO1tK6BB5mXmprWVfPv2l3cm-OrE6WGv0qDS1m263ErBGcSoKs9gH_lt_3EtruDfSGP/s1600/caverna.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvM84SDhuMcD6ltMyRNOt8PwF6cVZZUomdMlbrd_Bm0TTI0QUL8xD0RgGOjO2YVfZOrWDORVXxOPO1tK6BB5mXmprWVfPv2l3cm-OrE6WGv0qDS1m263ErBGcSoKs9gH_lt_3EtruDfSGP/s1600/caverna.jpeg" height="400" width="225" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another game I enjoyed that day was The Princess Bride: Prepare to Die (<a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/137348/princess-bride-prepare-die">http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/137348/princess-bride-prepare-die</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This game is a variation on the familiar apples-to-apples game. In it you place down a black card which is a reason for the character to "prepare to die." And then going around the table the "non-readers" of the black card play their red cards which have character names on it that relate (or don't) to the black theme card. It led to some hilarious comparisons, and an enjoyable variant on apples-to-apples.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A game that I tried later in the day was Save Doctor Lucky (<a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1157/save-doctor-lucky">http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/1157/save-doctor-lucky</a>)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This game was a variant on the original Kill Doctor Lucky. Instead of trying to kill him in the reverse-Clue style of the first game. In this edition the players are trying to rescue Doctor Lucky off of the Titanic as it goes down. All the mechanics of the game are identical except that when you make a save attempt, another player MUST be able to see you and the doctor. The game-board also sinks beneath you as the draw piles are exhausted. It was a nice twist on the Doctor Lucky games, although in my opinion I think Kill Doctor Lucky was a bit more fun since it was the first one released. But that's just my two cents.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
All in all it was an enjoyable day gaming with friends.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Enjoy!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keep those dice rolling!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

They are <a href="http://www.wargamesfactory.com/" target="_blank">Wargames Factory Plastics</a> by the way. Here is the first major update as what I have assembled to date.<br />
<br />
Assembled But Unpainted<br />
<br />
<div>
Archers (15)<br />
Arrow Carriers (2)<br />
Taiko Drummer (2)<br />
Taiko Drum Carrier (2)<br />
Banner Bearer (2)<br />
Lead Commander with Saihai (command stick) (2)<br />
Samurai with Spear (15)<br />
Samurai with Katana (16)<br />
Tai Commanders (4)<br />
Horagi (Conch) Unit (2)<br />
Ashirigu with Yari (25)</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'll see what I can get done in the coming months as my master's courses have begun back up again. 87 out of 225 assembled is good for a starting point. My New Year's resolution is to get them assembled and painted at least by years end. If I get them assembled and painted sooner, I'd like to get in some games with them. So far I'm thinking of either the <a href="http://www.flagshipgames.com/html/taiko-.html" target="_blank">Taiko!</a> rules or the <a href="http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/30431/killer-katanas-ii" target="_blank">Killer Katanas II</a> rules set.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
In Taiko! its 1 figure = 50 men<br />
In Killer Katanas II its 1 figure =120-300 men (According to an internet search, as my rules are currently on their way).</div>
<div>
If KK2 scale is as claimed, then I look forward to being able to do a historical battle of about 33,000 men on a side. Should prove interesting. Although at the Taiko! scale I can do roughly one-third of at at 11,000. I could always fudge the scales later. At roughly 100 figures a side it will be a decently sized battle.<br />
<br />
Until Next Time,</div>
<div>
Have a Good Battle!<br />

In terms of the hobby I managed to play a few games of In Her Majesty's name. I guess I didn't quite get everything posted which I would have liked to. But its a brand new year coming. Time to choose a new hobby goal and move forward with that goal.<br>
The goal which I want to accomplish this year is to complete some of my samurai army. If I work on a figure a day I'll have it done in about a year. I guess a more realistic goal would be to paint enough until I can do a decent sized battle (or tire of painting sashimos) whatever comes first.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Anyway, hope your holidays were great, and I'll see you on the other side of 2014.</p>

They arrived a few days ago and I'm looking forward to assembling them when I get time. I've always been intrigued by Japanese samurai, so I purchased several boxes of those. I'll get some pictures up of them when I begin to build and paint them. Right now I'm in the research phase to determine which clans I want to paint up. Ii Naomasa's "Red Devils" seem to be a popular clan to paint up. They were a subdivision of the Tokogowa Clan. I might decide to paint them, but right now I'm leaning toward painting clans which are not as popular to paint for miniatures, because then if I meet another person who plays samurai miniatures, then we won't be fighting with two of the same clans on the battlefield. I'm still waiting for my rules so far.<br />
<br />
Have a good battle,<br />

That place is amazing if you are into miniatures to see some of the different paint schemes which could be used for Check Your Six. It's also amazing if you are just a fan of airplanes or World War II in general. This is a manipulation of the BF-109E which is awaiting restoration in the museum. It was a very fun manipulation to do, I've now learned what I can do with RAW files. It makes it a lot easier to balance the final image. I have more control over the final result by shooting in RAW.<br />
I have not yet gotten out to see one of their air shows. But if I ever get the opportunity, I would not hesitate to see one.<br />

<br />
This post will have little to do with actual miniatures as the past ones have been, but don't despair it does relate somehow. It will rather feature two military plane photos which I have for sale as prints.<br />
<br />
Photography is one of my loves just like miniatures and painting them. I thought I'd link to my deviantart page where you can find wonderful prints such as those pictured below. There will be more photos coming in the future. That will now be where I will maintain my photography.<br />

If you feel so inclined and would like one of these pieces hanging on your wall, you can purchase prints of these off of my deviantart site. Watches and faves on deviantart are appreciated as well.<br />

<br />
I'm running a poll for the next month or so on this blog. You can find it on the top of the blog. I'm mainly just curious as to how you found out about this blog. Were you searching for it specifically, or did you stumble across it some other way. I'd appreciate it if you gave me some feedback.<br />
<br />
Thanks,<br />

After a bit of a hiatus, I've returned to the blogging sphere, posts will be infrequent as of late, since I have now began a new job within the last two months, and have gone back to school at DeVry to get my Master's degree in Netcom Management. I won't even try to keep this on a regular schedule, but I'll be posting when I have new and interesting items to post for your perusal.<br />
<br />
In another edition of Gaming Goodness, I'll be covering the game Letters from Whitechapel. Letters is a board game which was revised by Fantasy Flight Games in 2013 from a version originally published in 2010. It is similar in game-play to Scotland Yard. Letters is a deductive game with a strong cat and mouse feel.<br />
<br />
<br />
<img class="CSS_LIGHTBOX_SCALED_IMAGE_IMG" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEie_d1Binkvx2vzQuojqzHLxSJxoeghu9ydikkVACUXGjM14gTTN1dVVAhTKY3H96PXaCkhVDhJ2Fv6OOfkOK8om-6yCXQAL6wVGU0C9kOFYiBW6VCjsCMVoaAAQDpzuAw275IdkNrwb8oO/s1600/Letters+From+Whitechapel.jpg" style="height: 473px; width: 473px;" /><br />
<br />
Gameplay: <br />
This game plays similarly to another deductive game, Scotland Yard. Although in it you as the players are trying to find "Mister X" as he moves across London. In that one you only know where he is by the methods of transportation used, and when he has to reveal himself at strategic points. The hidden movement mechanic is where the similarity ends with these two games.<br />
Letters gives the players an especially nerve wracking game play experience.<br />
One player takes the role of Jack the Ripper. It is his goal to select a hideout on the board. The white pawns are Jack's targets. Jack will place out white round tokens of which a few are dummies to denote possible targets. The police players then put out their patrol tokens, as directed by the head of the investigation. Like Jack's wretched tokens, the police patrol tokens also have some dummy blanks.<br />
The round is ready to begin. The waiting game is more important in the play because it gives Jack the opportunity to determine where the patrols actually are, but it gives the police players the opportunity to move the wretched pawns onto another adjacent number in a way that might make it harder for Jack.<br />
The heart of the game really begins after Jack strikes and then he is trying to maneuver from the crime scene to the location of his hideout. The trick is that he only has a certain amount of moves available each round. Although they are enough to get across the entire length of the board, if he is forced to detour a lot, then it would reduce the amount of flexibility that he has.<br />
<img alt="Letters from Whitechapel Gameplay" class="pinImage" src="http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/736x/9a/94/17/9a9417f4f0099f0a2ae39d685cddf2a7.jpg" style="height: 720px; margin: 0 auto; padding: 40px 0px; width: 540px;" /><br />
Components:<br />
1 Rulebook, Game Board, and Jack Screen<br />
6 Reference Sheets<br />
4 Jack's Letter Pieces<br />
5 Head of the Investigation Tiles (the oval ones)<br />
5 Special Movement Tokens (Coach and Alleyway)<br />
16 Wooden Tokens (Black for police patrols and white for the targets)<br />
12 Wooden Pawns (2 Jack Figures, 5 Police Figures, 5 White Wretched Pawns)<br />
27 Plastic Markers (Red crime scene markers, and yellow clue markers)<br />
<br />
What I thought of it:<br />
I've had a chance now to play it several times. Both playing as Jack, and as the police. It is a totally different experience based upon which side you play. Jack is the harder of the two to play. Firstly because he is never actually on the board and you must keep track of him, without giving away your location based upon how you look at the board. The police are in essence a team of players, who can confer as to where best to place the tokens on the board. Although it is easy for Jack the first few nights, don't allow that to fool you. I've been caught before on the final night, and I've also managed to throw the game by making an illegal move as Jack, which would have lead to me getting captured. If you are looking for a good cognitive game of deduction, then you have found it in Letters From Whitechapel.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Today's entry is a simple list, or update if you will about what I want to eventually get to for this hobby of mine. Here are some of the things I'd like to finish within the next few months. These dust tactics figures will be very useful to for In Her Majesty's Name. I finally have figures so I can test out the walker rules. Right now they are in various stages of paint. When I get back to them, I'll post some more pictures of them.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">They'll take some work to paint and weather.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
<br />
I also picked up some Laser Grenadiers from Dust Tactics as well. If I get to painting the German troops, then I'll have some good VSF looking troops which I can either use for the Prussian squad in the books, or fashion my own. The Laser Sturmgrenadieren Squad just is dripping with Victorian science fiction potential. Those could be anything from arc-rifles, to flame-throwers, to weapons that launch projectiles off of super-heated steam. Just some ideas of how I might stat them up for IHMN.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Troops with goggles and gasmasks (very steampunky)...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
There are also a number of board games I'd like to get on the table. Sky Traders being the main one. Some others are Space Empires 4x, Dread Pirate, and Letters From Whitechapel. Seeing as how I've not gotten a lot of play with those. A review of Letters of Whitechapel is forthcoming on this blog. Stay tuned.<script type="text/javascript">

That being said, this edition of miniature monday's will take a different approach than the past ones. This month Paizo released a map pack for the game Pathfinder entitled Starship Chambers.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="http://static1.paizo.com/image/product/catalog/PZO/PZO4051_500.jpeg" class="shrinkToFit decoded" src="http://static1.paizo.com/image/product/catalog/PZO/PZO4051_500.jpeg" height="320" width="201" /> </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These map tiles have many possibilities beyond their namesake. You could run them with Star Wars Saga Edition, since the square tiles are just the same size as the maps for Saga. I however plan on using them for the Star Wars Miniatures Game, since it would be interesting to try a game that wasn't shaped like a standard map. Or by overlaying the tiles on to an existing map, we now have a installation in the arctic of Hoth, or a medical facility on the forest of Endor. Here's some ideas that popped in my head as I looked at the tiles, beyond just the namesake starship.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-- Imperial facility</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-- Forest shelter</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-- Defunct science station</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-- Mad scientist lab</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
-- Hidden rebel facility</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The possibilities are almost endless. This map pack has value for anyone running any sort of Star Wars game. Or any modern or near-future game. Just a short review this time.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Rating</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4.5 out of 5.0</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The hallways in this pack could be a bit mundane, but if you watch the Star Wars films, what you encounter more often than not, are long metal hallways that seem to stretch on forever. This map pack delivers a space station feel, in spades.</div>

It feels like eons since I've posted anything. After taking a recent break from painting miniatures, I've decided to get back to it. I got to play in a Check Your Six! game at the HMGS Spring Convention back in June. It was a great time. I returned home with some Wargames Factory Persians which I won in the raffle, and a model of a T34-85 by Revel which will be a future project at some point.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You may be wondering where is it that I paint these miniatures, what does his work area look like? In this post I'll give you a tour of my workbench. Please keep all your arms and legs inside the vehicle, and we'll proceed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's a simple workbench out in my garage where all the magic happens. On the left of the bench is a shoebox to hold the Tamiya paint pots. On top of that box (but not in the picture) is a smaller box that I use to hold the I-94 decals for the Check Your Six! aircraft.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The cutting boards are versatile items for painting, cutting, and gluing miniatures. It helps protect the table underneath. What I currently working on are planes for the miniatures game Crimson Skies. An air game set in an alternate 1930's America.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjXc3F2A_mL2n_lKrMd3IAQioUXIj9NbkdZm5f0kdkAn1X0ZqvaKqUFn1aUsT33sfkhApow_FMA8zciL2kyk5W7fA9Y7thyF2zECruTRiUZXCMo7SSpCg8GmvC1dm2kZwNnBbbTbN0PGzZs/s1600/IMG_20140704_124047221_HDR.jpg" height="320" width="180" /> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now we come to the right side of the workspace in this tour. This is lead-mountain, the file-trays and bags next to them. Various unpainted figures and WW2 aircraft for future projects. Mostly my unpainted German and Japanese. A cup to hold the brushes, and a clock for me to watch as time passes by.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCM7nK_3KP1NDin5D65MF_q9qvvEq6nTKY2yMgmBERx0or3AjohbCx9i1Q4ti325YBMK6-gtkpM7Ln9EkZBzhe7wOBlQ0ut5Oqponcux7CLGAoCibTBw1wHrSS-lwmL_4h84e7Bx-0yT0S/s1600/IMG_20140704_123936172_HDR.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCM7nK_3KP1NDin5D65MF_q9qvvEq6nTKY2yMgmBERx0or3AjohbCx9i1Q4ti325YBMK6-gtkpM7Ln9EkZBzhe7wOBlQ0ut5Oqponcux7CLGAoCibTBw1wHrSS-lwmL_4h84e7Bx-0yT0S/s1600/IMG_20140704_123936172_HDR.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
I hope you have enjoyed this tour of my workbench. Some of my future plans include building a shelf above the clock, paralleling the bench. This would give me additional room to hold some Vallejo paints, and they'd be easy to reach.<br />
<br />
Until next time. May the skies be full of critical hits!<br />

<br />
For in my eyes you've gone away<br />
and now I'm forced to walk alone<br />
yet in my heart love does stay.<br />
<br />
I rise to walk another day<br />
along this path that's overgrown<br />
for in my eyes you've gone away.<br />
<br />
I watch the clouds that turn so grey<br />
and think of what I should've known,<br />
yet in my heart my love does stay.<br />
<br />
I wait on time to come what may<br />
as I'm a rag doll tossed and thrown,<br />
for in my eyes you've gone away.<br />
<br />
You were once my sunny day<br />
my warmth for you my heart has shown,<br />
yet in my heart my love does stay.<br />
<br />
You choose to walk back to the bay<br />
to leave me hollow and unknown.<br />
For in my eyes you've gone away<br />
yet in my heart my love does stay.

Pandemic is a game originally released in 2008 by z-man games. The 2013 version of the game is the version which I have. And for this installment of gaming goodness this review can also apply to the older one, since the addition was two new characters and some minor tweaks. Having now played both versions, they both play the same. There are just some additional bells and whistles in the revised edition.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What's in the box? There are seven role cards in this edition. The contingency planner and quarantine specialist are the two new roles in this edition. What do the roles do? The quarantine specialist stops outbreaks in whatever city they are in. One of my friends had this role in a game I played a few months back. It was highly effective. The other new card, the contingency planner allows the player to look through the event discards (using an action) and place that card beneath the role card. The card can then be used once and is removed from the game afterwards. It can be quite powerful when used appropriately.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Gameplay</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Outbreak cards are inserted into the infection deck depending on how difficult you want the game to be. More outbreak cards make for a more difficult game. Infection cards are randomly drawn and those cities are infected in the beginning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The players begin in Atlanta after the roles have been dealt out. They perform 4 actions. Draw 2 player cards. And then infect cities at the current infection rate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Movement</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Move between interconnected cities (Car or ferry). To a city that player holds (direct flight) discard the card. To any city if current city is played (charter flight). From research lab to research lab (shuttle flight).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Treat disease</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Players remove disease cubes at the rate of one per action.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Find a cure</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Discard 5 city cards of a color to cure the corresponding disease. (4 if scientist).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Build a Research Station</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Discard the matching city card you are in to place a Research Station there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Share information</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Give or take the matching city card from another player that matches the city both of you are in currently. Very difficult to do, in the game I played last Friday this did not come up.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you are looking for a game which the players can easily win, I'd rate this one lower. But as a cooperative game goes, its one of the best. Every move counts, and the difficulty ramps up in the end, as with any cooperative game. In last Friday's game we played the players almost won it, and then the game took us. It might have been easier had we been using the newer edition. Seeing as how the quarantine specialist would have been a very valuable team member to have.</div>

It is in fact, its the classic Arabic epic. Although in this case its page views not classic literature. Yes you read correctly. I'm happy to have broken this threshold recently. Here is a poem and some miniatures pictures in honor of the event.<br />
<br />
A Thousand and One<br />
By: Kevin Meeks<br />
<br />
Seeking to find the legendary lamp,<br />
under the skies blazing lamp.<br />
The riddled door is barred and shut,<br />
to seal within the golden lamp.<br />
The route beneath the desert hidden<br />
to all but the seeker of the lamp.<br />
Wrapped in class with scimitars<br />
the guardians of the mystic lamp.<br />
The three wishes all men seek<br />
which lie within the bowels of this lamp.<br />
Tales have been sung of this treasure<br />
the golden cavern of the lamp.<br />
Greed attracts men, once they hear<br />
to rub the plain golden lamp.<br />
Wanting everything is a fault<br />
as only three wishes lie in this lamp.<br />
Beyond that no more can be sought<br />
of what's imbued in this lamp.<br />
Genies are in mythic tales told<br />
and reward those who find the lamp.<br />
Pushing men to madness and drink<br />
searching for this magical lamp.<br />
Three wishes you'll get and one is spent,<br />
two more are within this lamp.<br />
You try again to get your wish<br />
leaving one more within the lamp.<br />
The last one you spend frivolously<br />
as you remain holding the empty lamp.<br />
You learn the truth of Ali's lamp<br />
of the three wishes inside the lamp.<br />
<br />
Here are some miniatures which I have to get around to painting one of these days. They are Arabic in theme which would work very well for pulp era gaming, as well as any steampunk adventure set in the wilds of the orient. The first is a figure with a fez (those are cool) and a scimitar. the second figure has a hat like a mongol, and of course a larger sword. In the second photo there is a wizard, could be used as a vizier (in a fictional sense of the title). There is a slightly smaller 25-ish mm figure advancing with a spear and a turban style hat. And last but not least we have a bearded man in a turban brandishing what looks like a shotgun. These all need to be stripped of paint, re-primed, and then painted.<br />
<br />
Enjoy,<br />
Kevin<br />

</div>
The Zulus have actually been completed for some time now. They were instrumental in the scenario "Into Darkest Africa" which I ran two months ago. The results of those games can be found earlier in this blog. The Zulu miniatures are manufactured by a company specializing in hard plastic miniatures, <a href="http://www.wargamesfactory.com/" target="_blank">Wargames Factory</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These figures came with a lot more sprues than the zombies did. But came with the same number of figures, 30. The disassembled Zulu came with separate right and left arms, heads, bodies, and equipment. The equipment was an array of short spears, long spears, clubs, shields, rifles, and an arm holding a rifle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The best part about these figures is the sheer amount of variations in assembly. The benefit to this is that no two figures will be identical. Between assembling and painting that means that these 30 figures will not be identical to another player who has bought the same set. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Another thing to note is that they don't come with bases, but I ordered some from Wargames Factory as well just to be safe. I don't know if they will be packaged with them in the future, but I doubt it. I must say that this was a great idea because the bases are made from the same plastic as the figures. The plastic cement that melts the figures together, ensures that they'll never fall off their bases.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAZFLCeFkyJoGB2m1OsLsoWLkJx7DZypxD5aAZo40z6HY3PkjIRpQgubcymyeXH7p2wWOVxdCNIX8poFIPUuYf_tUThqGBHojFAw5aEscZ0yOVsje52CAr3Hsba2qTGYtjVxdTR7JuGKN/s1600/IMG_20140406_155908730.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibAZFLCeFkyJoGB2m1OsLsoWLkJx7DZypxD5aAZo40z6HY3PkjIRpQgubcymyeXH7p2wWOVxdCNIX8poFIPUuYf_tUThqGBHojFAw5aEscZ0yOVsje52CAr3Hsba2qTGYtjVxdTR7JuGKN/s1600/IMG_20140406_155908730.jpg" height="320" width="180" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The figures themselves took to paint very nicely after priming. The detail on the castings wasn't lost under the paint either. I could probably go back and change the skin tone to have more of a range of colors instead of just one dark skin tone. The most fun part of painting these miniatures were the shields and the white war paint. It gave me a great deal of joy to try and make each figure unique. I'll leave you with three pictures of the finished horde.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Until next time!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Cheers!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And have a great game!</div>
